Right now alkaline water is all the rage, and there is a reason for that!  Alkaline water can be used to treat many ailments and conditions effectively without the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. What makes alkaline water so special is that it is water with a pH higher than 7. The pH scale assigns numbers between one and fourteen to describe the acidity of water. Anything below a seven is considered acidic, while anything above seven is considered alkaline. Regular tap water can be as low as 5, which is as acidic as a cup of black coffee!  Sometimes the pH is changed through a process called ionization, and sometimes it can occur naturally, as it does in some mineral and spring waters. Either way, the reasons to choose alkaline water over tap or other bottled water are many. So, why alkaline water?

According to Rose Wellness Center for Integrative Medicine, virtually all types of diseases thrive in an acidic environment and too much acidity has been linked to inflammation, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune disease, chronic pain and other chronic conditions. Alkaline water has been proven to reduce the level of acidity in the digestive system, blood, and the overall body in general. This means that alkaline water may now be used to prevent, treat and even cure many of the diseases caused by high acidity.

Alkaline Water and Insomnia

The Sleep Foundation says that going to bed even mildly dehydrated can have a negative impact on your sleep. Even if you start the night hydrated, you lose bodily fluids while you sleep, even more so if you breathe through your mouth or have sleep apnea. The temperature of the room, a late day exercise routine or even a hot shower can also contribute to dehydration at night increasing the likelihood of insomnia. Keeping a refillable alkaline water next to your bed will help stave off the dehydration because alkaline water is significantly more helpful in hydrating your body than regular bottled water. This is because the hexagonal structure of alkaline water makes it easier for the cells to absorb, which hydrates the body more completely and at a faster rate.

Another way that alkaline water helps decrease insomnia is by helping to alleviate leg cramps and other bodily aches and pains making sleep more comfortable. Alkaline water, for athletes, can be a real game changer as hydration is desperately needed after a long game or tough work out. This is also true for anyone dealing with insomnia as Alkaline water replaces vitamins and minerals as well as helping to regulate body temperature, improve muscle function and rebalance the body’s pH.

Often insomnia is brought on by indigestion or heartburn caused by acid reflux disease. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, over 60 million Americans experience these symptoms. Acid reflux is a digestive disease of the stomach that can cause permanent esophageal damage and ulcers, even bleeding ulcers that can lead to death. Alkaline water can reduce the pH in the stomach, which will soothe acid reflux and prevent damage to the lining of the stomach walls and esophagus.

Alkaline Water and Joint Pain

Joint pain is normally caused by stressing the joint. The stress causes the joint to produce an overabundance of glucose, which then turns to lactic acid. It is the acid build up that causes pain and inflammation. According to the Institute for Prevention and Nutrition, an alkaline diet, including alkaline water, will help reduce inflammation, and thereby reduce the pain in the joints.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults experience joint pain as a result of inflammation from arthritis. Arthritis is joint inflammation caused by tissue acidosis. This type of inflammation causes pain, swelling, stiffness and redness of the joints. Doctors recommend an alkaline diet, including alkaline water, for patients experiencing these symptoms. This is also true for patients with Bursitis, which is chronic joint inflammation and Ankylosing spondylitis and Adult Still’s Disease, also chronic inflammatory diseases that cause intense joint pain. By drinking alkaline water, the body’s pH becomes more balanced. This reduces the acid which is the root cause of the symptoms of these diseases, and thereby reduces or completely alleviates the pain they cause.

Alkaline Water and Allergies

Allergies come in many forms. According to WebMD, the most common allergies are to pollen, dust mites, mold, animal dander, insect stings, latex, and certain food and medications. The severity of symptoms ranges greatly depending on the person and ranges from mild to deadly. Alkaline water treats allergies in two main ways. First, most bottled alkaline water is created through a process called ionization and therefore contains ionic calcium, which is proven to reduce allergies. The other way that alkaline water helps to reduce or stop allergies is by slowing the production of histamine. Histamine is a chemical in the body that is part of the immune response and plays a central role in inflammation and itching. When your body is dehydrated, histamine production is increased to help preserve the water remaining in the body. The chemical makeup of alkaline water, in it’s smaller hexagonal form, is able to adequately penetrate each cell and reach the blood and all organs, providing for much better hydration than other types of water and sports drinks.

Alkaline water is so popular for a reason. Many people have been able to find relief using alkaline water! Reducing the acidity in the body promotes better health in so many ways.
